(ASI) Mourning in the world of Italian culture. This morning has died in Milan,
after a short illness, Vito Salierno. With him, the Italian culture loses one of
its best. Language and Urdu literature was the most representative in the West.
In the specific field dell'islamistica, he devoted himself to the study of the
Opera Omnia of Allama Muhammad Iqbal, the poet-prophet of the Pakistani nation
and spokesman of modern Islam: the first two volumes, translated from Urdu into
Italian, appeared in 2010 (The Call of the caravan) and 2011 (The Gabriel of Wing's). He has participated in International Iqbal Conferences the
University of the Punjab Lahore (1964), Cordova (1991), Gent (1997), Lahore (2003),
chairman of the "Iqbal Foundation Europe" since 2007, and in this capacity he
organized conferences Iqbal in Milan in 2009 and 2010.
Many of his publications on this specific theme, including "Islam in the
Mediterranean" (2012). In September last year, has released an
interview with Press Agency Italy on interaction between Islam and the cultural
and historical southern Italy. Our editorial addresses our deepest condolences
to the family of Professor Salierno.

In Professor Salierno’s untimely passing away, we have lost a great scholar and
one of the leading authorities on Dr. Muhammad Allama Iqbal, Pakistan’s national
poet. It was in recognition of his remarkable services for promoting the
understanding of Allama Iqbal’s message, that Sitara e Quid e Azam, was
conferred upon Professor Vito Salierno.
Professor Salierno will always be dearly remembered in Pakistan. May he rest in
eternal peace.

I would like to express deepest condolences on the passing away of Professor
Vito Salierno, the President of Iqbal Foundation, Europe. He was a great scholar
of Allama Muhammad Iqbal, eastern literature and a great humanist in his own
right.
Professor Salierno’s translations of Allama Iqbal’s works into Italian helped
introduce the thoughts of one of the greatest Muslim philosopher poets of 20th
century to a wider audience.
The people of Pakistan will always be grateful to Professor Salierno for his
outstanding services in this regard.
Professor Salierno also had a deep love for Pakistan, a country that he knew
well. In his passing away, the people of Pakistan have lost a great friend.
We pray for his soul to rest in eternal peace and for his family and friends to
bear their loss with strength and courage. We share in their loss and grief.

Professor Vito Salierno’s passing away. I would like to express my profoundest
condolences to his family, friends and to all those who had the opportunity to
be close to him and benefit from his vast learning.
Professor Salierno was the President of Iqbal Foundation, Europe, and a leading
scholar of Allama Iqbal and other Pakistani writers. I had the privilege to meet
him in person when, on behalf of the Government of Pakistan, I presented to him
one of Pakistan’s most prestigious civil awards, Sitara e Quid e Azam. I was
deeply impressed by his personality and learning.
We pray for his soul to rest in eternal peace. The people of Pakistan share the
bereavement felt by his family and friends in this sad moment.
